Though there are different types of anchors in use, the features of marine anchors can be generalized below.

• The ring or hook is found at the top part of the anchor. It is where the anchor connects to the chain or cable.
• The shank is the straight part of the anchor and connects the ring to the lowest part of the arms. It is the heaviest part of an anchor. It helps in burying the anchor to the seabed to stabilize the vessel.
• The crown is the round arch in the lowermost part of the anchor. It connects the arms to the central shaft. The shank is fitted to the crown and forms a ball-and-socket joint.
• The arms are the lower projections found on the anchor. They extend in either direction of the crown and assist in the grip.
• The fluke is the flat part of the anchor that looks like a shield. The tip at the end of the arms extends in both directions from the crown. The fluke allows the arms to fasten to the seabed by digging through the floor or rocky elements.
• The throat is the inner extension of the arm that is curved. It connects the shank and the arms.
• A balancing band is a sleeve-like structure found at the center of the shank. It allows the anchor to balance itself during the lifting operations.
• The chain cable is used to lower and haul the anchor from and to the seabed. It also maintains mechanical stability.
• The hawse pipe guides the chain cable from the deck to the outside part of the boat, It is used when lowering or hauling the anchor upwards.
• The chain stopper provides intermediate support and guides it between the windlass and the hawse pipe.
• Chain locker and anchor pocket are used to store the anchor and chain when not being used. There are air holes in place for drainage in the event of flooding.
• The windlass is used to lower and pull up the anchor when needed. It acts as a pulley system for lifting the anchor vertically.
